Mesothelioma Prevention: Dealing With Asbestos At Home

Asbestos was widely used in many building and industrial materials, including siding panels, roof shingles, mortar, flooring and insulation. Asbestos containing material still exist in many homes. Here are some EPA recommendations for dealing with asbestos around the home:

Leave asbestos alone. Generally, material in good condition will not release asbestos fibers. The danger occurs when fibers are released and inhaled into the lungs. For a list of materials that possibly contain asbestos, visit http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/

Inspect asbestos-containing material regularly for visible signs of wear without touching it.

Generally limit activities in any areas having damaged asbestos material. In particular, keep children away from such areas.

Avoid sweeping, or vacuuming debris that may contain asbestos. Also avoid sanding, scraping, or drilling holes in materials that possibly contain asbestos.

Have removal and major repair done by people trained and qualified in handling asbestos. It is highly recommended that sampling, cleaning and minor repair also be done by asbestos professionals.

If you need to discard asbestos material, check with local health, environmental, or other appropriate officials for proper handling and disposal procedures.

Mesothelioma Variants...Types and Severities

Mesothelioma is a rare yet deadly cancer that almost always surfaces in a malignant form and results in tumors on significant organs of the body. Most people believe mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium. So what exactly is the mesothelium? The mesothelium is a film or sac that surrounds vital organs in an attempt to protect them (such organs can include the lungs and heart). Mesothelioma can almost always be attributed to asbestos. While we might think there exists only one form of mesothelioma, there actually several.  We will be talking about pleural mesothelioma, peritoneal mesothelioma, and pericardial mesothelioma. As unfortunate as it may be, mesothelioma’s symptoms don’t surface until the disease has progressed, which at times can be several years following exposure to asbestos. As one might guess, this can make diagnosis a pain and treatment a near impracticality.

Pleural mesothelioma is the widely known variant of mesothelioma. In this form of mesothelioma, tumors develop on the lining of the lungs. Most people with the disease have a difficult time swallowing, breathing, and getting around without coughing. They may also experience other symptoms such as weight loss.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a more uncommon form of mesothelioma. This variant of the disease sheds ill will on the lower parts of the body, particularly the abdomen and stomach. This cancer can start in either of the two locations and metastasize (grow into other parts of the body). This variant of the disease tends to bring about more severe symptoms such as nausea and blood clots. Since these tumors can put pressure on surrounding organs, they can make for an unpleasant sensation.

Finally, its time we talk of a very rare type of mesothelioma, pericardial mesothelioma. Th¬is variant focuses on the heart and can bring about palpitations and breathing problems.

If you are or have ever experienced these types of symptoms, its best to speak to a doctor.

Mesothelioma...Exactly What Is It?

Not too many people worldwide know exactly what mesothelioma is. Well, it’s a type of cancer brought about by exposure to a fiber-like material known as asbestos. As of today, there exists no definitive cure for the disease, something quite unfortunate for those who suffer from it. Asbestos, although initially appearing to be a miraculous material, turned out to be a fraud when in the ‘70s it was discovered that asbestos was linked to the development of mesothelioma. Since the disease takes years to surface, many that were once involved in the shipping, refining, and mining industries are suing their former employers over their development of the disease.

If you were involved in any of the above industries and feel that you may be suffering from mesothelioma, an asbestos attorney can help you. Asbestos attorneys work hand in hand with the family of sufferers to build the best possible case for those who have become contaminated with the disease. If a qualified attorney is hired, there should be no concern that a victim will lose a case. The majority of asbestos cases have a very positive outcome, with victims earning settlements in the millions. However comforting that may be, the settlement will never be able to replace the victim’s health.

Now’s the time to get in touch with an asbestos attorney to get the money that you deserve. Stop hesitating because, as we’ve said above, most if not all mesothelioma cases have potential for settlements. Do the proper research and set up a consultation with an attorney that you know is qualified to serve you.  With any mesothelioma sufferer, time is of the essence. Sitting and trying to decide whether to contact an attorney is pointless. Take some action and begin to get the compensation you deserve. Pick up the phone and call an attorney today.

Mesothelioma Patient Family Asbestos Exposure

Mesotheliom patient's family member may also be at risk for developing mesothelioma.

The reason for this is that those who were exposured to asbestos served as carriers of the asbestos fibers from the dust on their work clothes.

Wives of mesothelioma patients have developed this disease from inhaling asbestos fibers while doing the simple act of  sorting and washing their husband's work clothes.

Mesothelioma Patient Treatment Options

Mesothelioma patients are often overwhelmed with information immediately following a diagnosis.

Whether any particular type of treatment option will be available to a mesothelioma patient will depend on such things as the patient's age, general health, gender, and wishes.

The most common treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Mesothelioma Patient Nutrition

Mesothelioma patient undergoing treatment must follow a special cancer diet devised by their nutritionists.

By eating the correct amount of protein and calories as well as drinking the right amount of water, the mesothelioma patient nutrition protocol may be able to help the patient avoid losing weight, or regain lost weight, and decrease risks of infection.

Proteins and proper vitamin and minerals help combat the side effects of treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiation.

Mesothelioma Patient Clinical Trials

Mesothelioma patients who have exhausted traditional therapies or who seek a more aggressive approach to their disease often enroll in clinical trials to receive experimental therapy.

Those patients who are planning to partake in a clinical trial for mesothelioma are required to meet a certain set of criteria in order to be considered eligible as a clinical trial participant. Since the main idea behind conducting a clinical trial is to assess the ability of a newly introduced treatment or drug in curing the disease, there are benefits and certain hazards involved.

The benefits include gaining access to new drugs resulting from new research efforts, constant monitoring
from expert physicians.  Some of the risks involved include exposed to the possibility of developing adverse effects, and the emotional disappointment if the drug or treatment proves to be ineffective.

Mesothelioma Patient Support

When talking about support for mesothelioma or any other form of cancer patients, it can take on many different categories. The first and most important form of mesothelioma patient support comes through friends or family members who provide the emotional strength and guidance for the patient.

Indeed, patients might struggle with the idea of battling with an insurmountable disease such as cancer. Those mesothelioma patients suffering from emotional distress caused by their condition are often advised to participate in counseling efforts to deal with their emotions.

Other form of support services include religious leaders and home care services.

Mesothelioma Patient Profile

The Mesothelioma patient profile is typically that of a male, due to the occupations men are usually employed in.  Nearly 80% of persons suffering from this disease developed it from work environments where they were exposed to airborne asbestos fibers.

The ability for asbestos resist heat and fire (it was a good insulation material), made it ideal for use in such industries as ship building, gas and electric power plants, building construction, automotive plants, manufacturing, and telecommunications.

Since most of the workers in these industries are men, it explains why men are mostly the typical mesothelioma patient profile. The use of asbestos became popular among manufacturers in the early 1900s, and it wasn't until the mid 1980's that its use was banned.  Therefore, the mesothelioma patient profile age is a individual usually around the age of 60 and above.  The symptoms of mesothelioma might take about 15 to 40 years though before they become evident.
